Halifax Regional Police say a 26-year-old man has died following an assault on the city's waterfront over the weekend.

Police say they found a man unresponsive on the boardwalk when they responded to a report of a disturbance on Lower Water Street Sunday night.

The man was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries, police say, and he later died.

The Halifax waterfront was one of the locations of the Halifax Busker Festival over the long weekend.

Police said in a news release the investigation is in its early stages, and they did not say if anyone had been arrested.

The identity of the victim was not released.
