New inductees into the at the include 's 1976 album 鈥淎rrival,鈥 's 1994 album 鈥淩eady to Die," 's 1978 breakthrough 鈥淧arallel Lines鈥 and Gene Autry's 1949 version of 鈥淩udolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.鈥
Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced the 25 new titles in the class of 2024 on Tuesday, saying in a statement that they are 鈥渨orthy of preservation for all time based on their cultural, historical or aesthetic importance in the nation鈥檚 recorded sound heritage.鈥
Puerto Rican singer H茅ctor Lavoe's signature song, 1978's 鈥淓l Cantante,鈥 written by Ruben Blades, will enter the , along with Mexican singer 鈥檚 tribute to his mother, 鈥淎mor Eterno." The library is enshrining a 1990 recording of the song first released in 1984.
Other titles deemed to be among 鈥渢he defining sounds of the nation鈥檚 history and culture鈥 are Jefferson Airplane鈥檚 1967 album 鈥淪urrealistic Pillow,鈥 鈥檚 1994 album 鈥淒ookie鈥 and 鈥 1998 鈥淲ide Open Spaces,鈥 the most recording among the new inductees.
Lily Tomlin鈥檚 1971 album of sketches 鈥淭his Is a Recording鈥 is the only comedy and the only non-musical recording on this year's list.
Autry, the singing cowboy who was among America's biggest stars in the mid-20th century, recorded the definitive version of 鈥淩udolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer." Last year a newer holiday perennial, .
鈥淎rrival鈥 was the disco-tinged fourth album from the Swedish supergroup ABBA, and included their hits 鈥淒ancing Queen,鈥 鈥淢oney, Money, Money鈥 and 鈥淔ernando.鈥
Blondie and singer Debbie Harry had their commercial breakthrough with 鈥淧arallel Lines,鈥 an album with a famous striped black-and-white cover that featured 鈥淗eart of Glass.鈥 It's joined this year by another new wave classic from the same year, the self-titled debut album by the Cars.
The Notorious B.I.G.鈥檚 1994 album 鈥淩eady to Die鈥 featuring 鈥淛uicy鈥 and 鈥淏ig Poppa," the only album released during his life, headlines hip-hop entries that also include 鈥淟a-Di-Da-Di鈥 鈥 Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick's 1985 single.
