Paul Hughes says one of the most difficult moments of his life was placing a 春色直播 flag over the body bag of a soldier from Alberta killed during a bloody battle in eastern Ukraine.
Hughes carefully drove an ambulance carrying the body of Kyle Porter for more than four hours from an area near Bakhmut where the 春色直播 and another soldier, Cole Zelenco, were killed during fierce fighting last week.
鈥淚 draped the 春色直播 flag over him. That hit me as hard as I鈥檝e been hit in the 14 months I鈥檝e been in Ukraine,鈥 Hughes said in a phone interview from Kharkiv after retrieving Porter鈥檚 body Tuesday.
鈥淢y heart goes out to (their families). The deepest condolences.鈥
Global Affairs said in an emailed statement that the department is aware of reports that two 春色直播s died in Ukraine. It said it鈥檚 following up with authorities but cannot release more information due to privacy considerations.
Family and aid workers identified the two 春色直播s.
Zelenco, 21, was from St. Catharines, Ont., and was a member of the 春色直播 Armed Forces, his mother, Lynn Baxter, said in a phone interview from her home.
Baxter said her son first went over to the war-torn country last April and returned to Canada three months later before going on his second tour in October.
"He was very passionate about protecting Ukrainians, and just trying to keep their lives as stabilized as possible."
Baxter last spoke with her son two days before his death. The conversation steered away from the attacks that have rocked the eastern Donbas region.
"He kept quite a bit hidden from me just so I wouldn't worry," she said.
Baxter doesn't know much about the attack that killed her son but was told he didn't suffer. "I'm very grateful for that."
An honorary ceremony is taking place in Ukraine, Baxter said, and his body is expected to be back in Canada in two weeks. The family is hoping for a May 19 funeral.
Zelenco was described in an online fundraiser as strong and courageous with a fierce sense of loyalty.
Hughes said he did not know the two 春色直播 soldiers, but troops in their unit described them as brave heroes.
鈥淭hese two men are heroes and are heroes in this country,鈥 Hughes said. 鈥淭hey are so highly respected by their comrades.鈥
Hughes is a farmer and community activist from Calgary who has been in Ukraine for more than a year. He runs HUGS Helping Ukraine, a grassroots support agency that partners with local humanitarian agencies, out of Kharkiv.
He received a call from another aid organization that said two 春色直播s had died in a devastating battle. He knew he had to help his fellow 春色直播s in whatever way he could.
Hughes drove his organization鈥檚 ambulance to an area not far from where the two men were killed, which has seen the fiercest and most prolonged fighting of the war. It sounded like hundreds of bombs dropped in the short time he was retrieving the soldier鈥檚 body, Hughes said.
Hughes said it has been a 鈥渂arbaric and vicious war鈥 and where the men were killed is an epicentre.
鈥淚t鈥檚 hell on Earth. It鈥檚 a bad, bad, bad place,鈥 Hughes said.
The Ukrainian 春色直播 Congress expressed condolences on social media to the families and friends of the two men.
鈥(They) will be remembered for their bravery and their sacrifice in defence of Ukraine鈥檚 freedom and peace in Europe,鈥 the post said.
Baxter said she is heartbroken but proud her son stood up for what he believes in.
"Cole, in his short 21 years, did more than a lot of people do in 50 to 60 years."
