Pierre-Gilles leads three-medal day for Canada at short track speedskating World Cup

BEIJING - Jordan Pierre-Gilles earned two gold medals at a short track speedskating World Cup stop that saw Canada pick up three medals on Sunday.

The Sherbrooke, Que., native picked up his second gold of the weekend in the men's 500 metres, crossing the finish line in 40.666 seconds. Steven Dubois (40.695) of Terrebonne, Que., took silver and China's Long Sun (40.724) earned bronze.

Pierre-Gilles, 25, won Saturday's race in 40.711 seconds.

Later, Pierre-Gilles, Dubois and Montreal's Pascal Dion won gold in the men's 5000 relay, where they had won Olympic gold in 2022 in Beijing. The trio, which were joined by Montreal's William Dandjinou in the final, won the race in six minutes 55.964 seconds.

“I’m super happy with my day and with my weekend as a whole," Pierre-Gilles said. "Three distances and three gold medals, what more could I ask for?

"I’m proud of the entire team too. We proved once again that we are the best team in the world in the relay. And in the 500, it’s my third consecutive victory on the World Cup circuit. It gives me confidence and motivates me to keep up the hard work.â€

The ´ºÉ«Ö±²¥s were in third place with four laps remaining when Dandjinou executed an inside pass at the entry of the corner to overtake China and the Netherlands.

Canada, which earned its second gold of the season in the event, was joined on the podium by South Korea (6:56.717) and China (6:58.280).

Montreal's Maxime Laoun and Sherbrooke's Félix Roussel were also awarded relay medals as competitors in the semifinals and quarterfinals.
